fortune des Rougon
by Emile Zola
'fortune des Rougon' Summary
La Fortune des Rougon opens with the arrival of the ambitious Félicité Rougon and her young son Eugène in the small town of Plassans. Félicité is determined to secure a better life for herself and her family, and she quickly sets about manipulating the local political landscape to her advantage. Meanwhile, her illegitimate son, Pierre Rougon, is rising through the ranks of the police force, using his position to advance his own ruthless agenda. As the years pass, the Rougon-Macquart family becomes increasingly entangled in the web of power and corruption that permeates Second Empire France. They witness the rise and fall of governments, the outbreak of war, and the social upheavals that shape the nation's destiny. Through their eyes, Zola paints a vivid and unflinching portrait of a society in turmoil, a society where greed, ambition, and violence are rampant.Book Details
