Frau in Weiß Band 1

by Wilkie Collins

The Woman in White follows the story of Walter Hartright, an art teacher, who becomes entangled in the lives of two sisters: the beautiful and innocent Laura Fairlie and the manipulative and cunning Anne Catherick. When Laura is about to marry a wealthy but sinister man, Sir Percival Glyde, Walter discovers that Laura is being pursued by a woman dressed in white, who claims to be a sister of the deceased wife of Sir Percival. This mysterious woman, known as 'The Woman in White', warns Walter about the dangers of the marriage and reveals shocking secrets about Laura's past. As Walter investigates further, he unravels a web of deceit, obsession, and betrayal, uncovering a plot to defraud and imprison Laura. The novel explores themes of love, identity, and the power of secrets, with a focus on the Victorian social injustices faced by women.
