Freimaurer
'Freimaurer' Summary
In "Freimaurer", August von Kotzebue satirizes the public fascination with Freemasonry, a secret society that was shrouded in mystery and intrigue in the 19th century. The play's central character, Graf, is consumed by a relentless desire to penetrate the society's veiled rituals and uncover its hidden secrets. His relentless pursuit of this knowledge leads him down a path of misadventures and comical mishaps, often driven by misinformed rumors and wild speculation. Alongside him are other characters who are similarly consumed by the pursuit of forbidden knowledge, each with their own methods and motivations. The play follows their individual journeys as they attempt to unlock the supposed secrets of Freemasonry through a variety of means, including eavesdropping, infiltration, and even bribery. Through these humorous and ultimately futile attempts, Kotzebue subtly criticizes the insatiable desire for knowledge that can lead individuals astray and the dangers of believing in unfounded rumors and unfounded claims. The play's conclusion provides a poignant reflection on the importance of accepting the limits of our understanding and the folly of seeking knowledge for its own sake.Book Details
