Woman is a Weathercock
by Nathan Field
'Woman is a Weathercock' Summary
The play opens with Sir John Worldly, a wealthy merchant, trying to arrange marriages for his three daughters: Bellafront, Katherine, and Lucida. Bellafront is the eldest and most beautiful of the three, and she is desired by many suitors, including Captain Pouts, a short-tempered soldier; Sir Abraham Ninny, a foolish poet; and Strange, a wealthy merchant. Katherine is the middle daughter and is more interested in books than in marriage. Lucida is the youngest and most innocent of the three sisters, and she is pursued by Nevill, a quick-witted young man who is in love with her. As the play progresses, the sisters find themselves caught in a web of deception and mistaken identities. Bellafront agrees to marry Captain Pouts, but she is secretly in love with Scudmore, a young man who is not considered to be a suitable match by Sir John Worldly. Katherine disguises herself as a boy in order to escape from her father's house and pursue her studies. Lucida is tricked into marrying Sir Abraham Ninny, but she is later rescued by Nevill. In the end, all three sisters find happiness with the men they love. A Woman is a Weathercock is a witty and charming comedy that explores the complexities of love, marriage, and identity.Book Details
