'Freiwerber' Summary
Friedrich Stievel, ein bescheidener Konrektor an einem örtlichen Gymnasium, steht vor einer Herausforderung, als er sich entschließt, der schönen Berta einen Heiratsantrag zu machen. Seine Schüchternheit treibt ihn dazu, seinen Freund Theobald Spaatz um Hilfe zu bitten, der als 'Freiwerber' fungieren soll. Doch Theobalds Bemühungen, Friedrich zu helfen, erweisen sich als grotesk ungeschickt und führen zu einer Reihe von komischen Missverständnissen und Verwicklungen. Der Roman erzählt die Geschichte von Friedrichs und Theobalds missglückten Versuchen, Berta zu beeindrucken und ein glückliches Ende zu finden.
