Georgica

Georgica

by Virgil

Virgil's *Georgics* is a four-book poem that explores the art and practice of agriculture in ancient Rome. Written during the reign of Augustus, the work combines traditional agricultural knowledge with philosophical reflections on the nature of work, the role of the farmer in society, and the importance of living in harmony with nature. Virgil draws inspiration from earlier Greek poets, particularly Hesiod, as well as from Epicurean philosophy, weaving together practical advice with mythological narratives and reflections on the beauty of the countryside. Although intended as a guide for farmers, the *Georgics* also transcends its practical focus to become a powerful meditation on human life and the relationship between humans and the natural world.
