Im Frankreich des 13. Jahrhunderts verliebt sich der junge Adlige Bertrand de Born in die schöne Raimonde de Toulouse, eine Anhängerin der Katharer. Ihre Liebe wird auf eine harte Probe gestellt, als die Inquisition gegen die Katharer vorgeht und Raimonde als Ketzerin angeklagt wird.
