Hymn of the Nativity, Sung by the Shepherds
'Hymn of the Nativity, Sung by the Shepherds' Summary
In Richard Crashaw’s A Hymn of the Nativity, Sung by the Shepherds, we see the shepherds' perspective on Jesus's birth. Crashaw uses elaborate poetic devices including antithesis, paradox and imagery to create a sense of paradox between the humility of the stable and divinity of Jesus's birth, and the poverty of the shepherds and the richness of their gift. Crashaw's poem also explores ideas about childhood, nature and love through imaginative imagery and metaphors to describe and understand the true meaning of the birth of Christ.Book Details
