Hypatia

by Charles Kingsley

Hypatia is a historical novel set in 5th-century Alexandria, Egypt. The story revolves around a young monk, Philammon, who leaves his desert monastery to seek a life of religious devotion in the city. However, he soon becomes disillusioned by the corruption and violence of urban life. Philammon encounters a variety of characters, including Hypatia, a renowned philosopher and mathematician; Cyril, the bishop of Alexandria; and a band of Goths who have recently arrived in the city. As Philammon navigates the complex religious and political landscape of Alexandria, he must confront his own beliefs and the limits of his faith.
