Il fu Mattia Pascal racconta la storia di un uomo che, stanco della sua vita e dei suoi obblighi, decide di fingere la propria morte e assumere una nuova identità. Il protagonista, Mattia Pascal, si ritrova così a vivere una doppia vita, ma la sua nuova libertà e la sua nuova identità lo portano a sperimentare un'alienazione ancora più profonda. Il romanzo esplora temi come l'identità, l'illusione, l'assurdità dell'esistenza e il potere di scelta individuale in un mondo spesso governato dal destino. Con una scrittura ironica e profonda, Pirandello ci presenta un ritratto realistico della società italiana del primo Novecento, mostrando i suoi limiti e le sue contraddizioni.
