Mattia Pascal, un uomo insoddisfatto della sua vita familiare e sociale, decide di scappare da tutto e fingere la sua morte. Assume la nuova identità di Adriano Meis e inizia una nuova vita, libera dalle responsabilità e dai legami del passato. Tuttavia, la sua nuova vita non gli porta la felicità sperata.
