Schimmelreiter ist ein Roman von Theodor Storm, der im 19. Jahrhundert spielt und die Geschichte von Hauke Haien erzählt, einem Deichgrafen an der Nordseeküste. Hauke ist ein harter und geradliniger Mann, der die Sicherheit des Deiches über alles stellt. Seine Hingabe zum Deich und seine unerschütterliche Entschlossenheit machen ihn jedoch auch zum Opfer seiner eigenen Ideale. Als ein verheerender Sturm droht, opfert er sein Leben, um den Deich zu retten und so die Bewohner des Dorfes vor dem Untergang zu bewahren.
