בגנים In the Gardens
by אורי ניסן גנסין Uri Nissan Gnessin
'בגנים In the Gardens' Summary
The story begins with the father sitting in his study, trying to write a sermon. He is interrupted by the sound of his daughter crying in the next room. He goes to her and finds her lying on the floor, having a seizure. He picks her up and holds her close, trying to comfort her. As he does so, he thinks about how much he loves her, despite her disability. He knows that she will never be able to live a normal life, but he is determined to make her life as happy as possible. The father takes the daughter to the doctor who assures him that his daughter's condition has no cure, but provides medicine to help with her seizures. The father tries to care for his daughter the best way he can, but he also feels sorry for himself, thinking how hard life is and how everyone looks down on them because of his daughter's condition. The story ends with the father and daughter sitting in the garden, the father reading to her from a book and the daughter half-listening, half-lost in her own world. The father's love for his daughter is evident in his every gesture, but the tragedy of their situation is also clear.Book Details
