Là-bas
'Là-bas' Summary
Là-Bas follows Jean des Esseintes, a jaded writer, as he becomes fixated on the medieval figure of Gilles de Rais. His fascination with the infamous child murderer leads him down a rabbit hole of historical and occult research, culminating in a confrontation with the dark reality of Satanism in fin de siècle France. Des Esseintes, seeking to escape the hollowness of modern life, finds himself drawn into a world of forbidden knowledge, clandestine gatherings, and rituals, where the boundaries between morality and transgression blur. He encounters a diverse cast of characters, including the enigmatic Dr. Johannes, a figure modeled on a real-life occultist, who introduces him to the tenets of Satanism. The novel's climax is a chilling depiction of a Black Mass, a blasphemous inversion of Christian ritual. Through Des Esseintes' journey, Huysmans explores themes of spiritual disillusionment, the seduction of the forbidden, and the human capacity for both good and evil, all within the context of a society grappling with the decay of traditional values and the rise of modern decadence.Book Details
