'Letter Of Credit' Summary
Rotha, a young American girl, loses both her parents and is left with nothing but the kindness of Mr. Digby-Southwode, a family friend from England. To ensure Rotha's future, Mr. Digby-Southwode places her in the care of her wealthy aunt, a woman who had previously wronged Rotha's mother and taken her inheritance. This aunt, fueled by a bitter past, treats Rotha with disdain and cruelty, mirroring the treatment her mother endured. Rotha is forced to endure a life of opulent loneliness, haunted by the ghosts of her parents and the injustice inflicted upon them. Meanwhile, Mr. Digby-Southwode travels back to England to care for his ailing father, leaving Rotha to navigate the treacherous waters of her aunt's household. As Rotha struggles to find her place in this world, she yearns for a connection, hoping for a glimmer of kindness and a chance at the love she deserves. Throughout her ordeal, she questions the possibility of redemption for her aunt and the likelihood of reuniting with Mr. Digby-Southwode, her only solace and beacon of hope. The novel explores themes of family, betrayal, loss, and the enduring power of love, leaving the reader questioning the true nature of wealth and the complex interplay of fate and personal choices.Book Details
