Иван Васильевич Ломов, застенчивый и неуклюжий помещик, приходит к своему соседу, Степану Степановичу Чубукову, с намерением попросить руки его дочери, Натальи. Но вместо романтичного признания, разговор быстро переходит в острую дискуссию о земельных границах, родословных и даже о том, чья охотничья собака лучше. В этой шуточной сцене, Chekhov иронически подчеркивает глупость человеческих страстей, неловкость в общении и те мелкие противоречия, которые могут разрушить даже самые прекрасные намерения.
