Иван Васильевич Ломов, застенчивый и неуклюжий помещик, приходит к своему соседу, Степану Степановичу Чубукову, с намерением попросить руки его дочери, Натальи. Но вместо романтичного признания, разговор быстро переходит в острую дискуссию о земельных границах, родословных и даже о том, чья охотничья собака лучше.
