Marius The Epicurean, Volume 2

Marius the Epicurean, Volume 2

by Walter Pater

Marius the Epicurean is a philosophical novel by Walter Pater, published in 1885. The novel is set in the Roman Empire during the reign of Marcus Aurelius and follows the life of Marius, a young Roman aristocrat who is searching for meaning and purpose in life. Marius is initially drawn to the Epicurean philosophy, which emphasizes the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain. However, as he grows older, he becomes increasingly dissatisfied with Epicureanism and begins to explore other philosophies, including Stoicism and Christianity. Ultimately, Marius finds that the only true meaning in life is to live in accordance with one's own conscience and to strive for the good of others.
