by Plato (Πλάτων)

The Menexenus is a Platonic dialogue in which Socrates and a young Athenian named Menexenus engage in a humorous and ironic conversation about funeral orations. The dialogue is a satire of Athenian rhetoric, particularly the tendency of orators to rely on empty and repetitive phrases. Socrates, through his questioning and playful skepticism, exposes the shallowness of the rhetorical conventions of the time, while also hinting at a deeper and more meaningful understanding of virtue and justice. The dialogue is considered a light-hearted critique of Athenian culture, highlighting both its strengths and weaknesses.
