Στο έργο του Πλάτωνα «Μενέξενος», ο Σωκράτης και ένας νεαρός Αθηναίος, ο Μενέξενος, συνομιλούν για τους επικήδειους λόγους, με τον Σωκράτη να σατιρίζει τους ρητορικούς τρόπους και τις κλισέ φράσεις των ομιλητών. Ο Σωκράτης, με εύστοχες ερωτήσεις και ειρωνεία, αποκαλύπτει την επιφανειακή φύση των ρητορικών τεχνικών, δίνοντας την εντύπωση ότι κάτι βαθύτερο, ηθικά και δίκαιο, κρύβεται κάτω από την επιφάνεια. Ο «Μενέξενος» αποτελεί μια ελαφριά κριτική του Αθηναϊκού πολιτισμού, φέρνοντας στην επιφάνεια τόσο τα δυνατά όσο και τα αδύνατα σημεία του.
