La historia comienza con Hoffmann, un escritor alemán, llegando a París durante la Revolución Francesa. Allí conoce a una hermosa mujer llamada Madeleine, con quien rápidamente se enamora. Madeleine lleva un collar de terciopelo, que se convierte en un símbolo de su amor y la fuente de un misterio que se va desarrollando a lo largo de la novela.
