Mount Royal Vol. I
'Mount Royal Vol. I' Summary
Mount Royal Vol. I is a mystery novel by Mary Elizabeth Braddon, first published in 1860. The novel tells the story of Marian Halcombe, a young woman who travels to the Canadian wilderness to investigate the mysterious death of her half-sister, Laura Fairlie. Marian soon discovers that Laura's death is not as simple as it seems, and she must unravel a web of lies and deceit in order to find the truth.
The novel opens with Marian receiving a letter from Laura, who is living in Canada with her husband, Sir Percival Glyde. Laura tells Marian that she is in danger, and she begs Marian to come to Canada and help her. Marian immediately sets sail for Canada, determined to find out what is wrong with Laura.
When Marian arrives in Canada, she finds Laura in a state of nervous collapse. Laura tells Marian that she is being poisoned by her husband, Sir Percival. Marian does not believe Laura at first, but she soon starts to suspect that Laura is telling the truth.
Marian begins to investigate Sir Percival, and she soon discovers that he is a very dangerous man. Sir Percival is a con artist who has married Laura for her money. He is also a murderer, and he has already killed one person who knew about his crimes.
Marian is determined to protect Laura from Sir Percival, but she is in over her head. Sir Percival is a powerful man, and he has many resources at his disposal. Marian is also in danger of being poisoned herself.
In the end, Marian is successful in saving Laura from Sir Percival. However, the novel ends with a sense of ambiguity. Marian is not sure if she has really defeated Sir Percival, or if he will come back to haunt her in the future.
Mount Royal Vol. I is a suspenseful and exciting mystery novel. Braddon's writing is sharp and witty, and she creates a vivid and believable world for her characters to inhabit. The novel is full of twists and turns, and it will keep the reader guessing until the very end.
