New Republic; or Culture, Faith and Philosophy in an English Country House

by William Hurrell Mallock

The New Republic is a satirical novel by William Hurrell Mallock, first published in 1877. The novel depicts a group of upper-class men and women who gather in an English country house to discuss their ideas for a utopia. The novel is a satire of the ideas of prominent figures at Oxford University at the time, particularly those associated with the aesthetic and Hellenism movements. Many of the characters in the novel are based on real people, including Violet Fane (Mrs. Sinclair), Thomas Huxley (Mr. Storks), William Money Hardinge (Mr. Leslie), Thomas Carlyle (Donald Gordon), and Walter Pater (Mr. Rose). The novel was a best-seller in its time and remains a significant work of satire.
