Oedipus at Colonus (Storr Translation)
by Sophocles
'Oedipus at Colonus (Storr Translation)' Summary
Having blinded himself after learning the truth about his parentage and his heinous crimes, Oedipus, accompanied by his daughters Antigone and Ismene, wanders the desolate landscape. Seeking sanctuary and a peaceful death, he arrives at Colonus, a sacred grove near Athens. He encounters Theseus, the Athenian king, who offers him protection and compassion. However, Oedipus's past remains a source of conflict, particularly with Creon, the king of Thebes, who seeks to exploit Oedipus's prophetic abilities for his own political gain. Oedipus's tumultuous past and the constant threat of conflict eventually lead to his demise, but not before he finds a semblance of peace and acceptance within the embrace of the Athenian land, fulfilling a prophecy and achieving a form of redemption.Book Details
