Our American Cousin

Our American Cousin

by Tom Taylor

Our American Cousin is a three-act farce by English playwright Tom Taylor, first staged in 1858. The play centers on Asa Trenchard, a naive and somewhat uncouth American who arrives in England to claim his family's estate. His arrival throws the aristocratic Trenchard family into chaos as they attempt to reconcile their expectations of a refined gentleman with Asa's down-to-earth demeanor. The play is full of witty dialogue, comical misunderstandings, and exaggerated characters, creating a light-hearted and humorous exploration of social class, cultural differences, and the complexities of family relationships. Although it is now mainly remembered for its tragic association with President Lincoln's assassination, Our American Cousin was a popular and enduring work of its time, offering audiences a light-hearted escape from the realities of Victorian society.
