Pomes Penyeach

Pomes Penyeach

by James Joyce

"Pomes Penyeach" is a collection of 13 poems written by James Joyce over a 20-year period, beginning in 1904. The poems are arranged chronologically in the booklet, and reveal some of Joyce's humor. The title of the collection is a play on the French word for apples ("pommes"), and the booklet was sold for a shilling, or 12 pennies. The collection of poems is actually 13 in number, which mirrors the Irish tradition of the "tilly," something like the well-known baker's dozen.
