In the small town of Dawson's Landing on the Mississippi, a black slave named Roxana swaps her own baby with her master's to protect him from being sold and to give him a better life. She names him Wilson and raises him as her own, but she keeps his true identity a secret. As Wilson grows older, he becomes increasingly aware of the racial divide in the town. He sees how black people are treated as second-class citizens, and he begins to question his own place in society. When he finally learns the truth about his parentage, he is torn between his love for Roxana and his desire to find his own identity.
