Royal Son and Mother
'Royal Son and Mother' Summary
Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin, born into a Russian aristocratic family, was destined for a life of wealth and privilege. However, at the age of seventeen, he experienced a profound religious awakening. This experience led him to reject his family's Orthodox faith and embrace Catholicism, the faith of his mother. His father, the Russian ambassador to the Netherlands, was shocked and dismayed when he learned of his son's conversion and subsequent decision to become a priest. Despite his father's wishes for him to pursue a military career, Demetrius was ordained in 1795. He chose to serve the pioneers of rural Maryland and Pennsylvania, dedicating his life to spreading the word of God and administering the sacraments to those living in remote and often challenging conditions. The book explores Gallitzin's tireless work as he traveled through rugged hills, establishing missions and communities that flourished under his guidance. The author, Baroness Pauline von Hugel, provides a detailed account of Gallitzin's remarkable life, highlighting his unwavering faith, his compassion for the marginalized, and his deep commitment to serving those in need.Book Details
