Stilpe erzählt die tragikomische Geschichte des gleichnamigen Protagonisten Willibald Stilpe, der von seinen jugendlichen Jahren als Schüler über seine Zeit als Revolutionär und Kritiker bis hin zu seinem makabren Ende verfolgt wird. Der Roman, der 1897 erschien, ist ein auf den Kopf gestellter Bildungsroman, der den Niedergang des Titelhelden als Dichter und Rezensent auf einer kleinen, vernachlässigten Bühne zeigt.
