'Tension' Summary
The story follows Pauline Marchrose, a woman of strong character and ambition, as she navigates the complexities of her new position as Lady Superintendent at a prestigious college in England. Her diligence and competence win the admiration of Sir Julian, the college director, and his agent, Mark Easter. However, this newfound admiration blossoms into romantic attraction between Pauline and Mark, who is unfortunately already married, though his marriage is largely in name only. Meanwhile, Sir Julian's wife, Lady Edna Rossiter, a manipulative and controlling woman, discovers that Pauline is the same woman who left her cousin, Clarence, after he was paralyzed in an accident. Fueled by resentment and a desire for revenge, Lady Edna embarks on a campaign of whispers and insinuations, attempting to destroy Pauline's reputation and career. As rumors spread within the close-knit community, Pauline finds herself facing a formidable challenge to her credibility and her future. The novel explores the dynamics of love and ambition, the destructive power of gossip, and the intricate workings of social class and power in a time of significant societal change.Book Details
