The Mikado Jewel
by Fergus Hume
'The Mikado Jewel' Summary
The Mikado Jewel is a classic mystery novel set in London in the early 1900s. The story begins with the discovery of the body of Mrs. Margaret Delaporte, a wealthy widow who has been murdered in her home. The only clue to the killer's identity is a mysterious Japanese jewel that was found at the scene of the crime.
Inspector Bucket, a Scotland Yard detective, is called in to investigate the murder. He soon discovers that Mrs. Delaporte had a number of enemies, including her son, her daughter-in-law, and her lover. However, there is also a possibility that the murder was committed by someone who was after the Japanese jewel.
As Bucket investigates the case, he uncovers a web of intrigue and deception. He learns that Mrs. Delaporte was involved in a number of shady business dealings, and that she had a secret past that she was trying to keep hidden. He also learns that the Japanese jewel is actually a valuable piece of jade that was stolen from a Japanese temple.
With so many suspects and so many red herrings, Bucket has his work cut out for him. But he is determined to solve the case and bring the killer to justice. In the end, he is able to piece together the clues and identify the killer. However, the solution to the mystery is not as simple as it seems, and there is a twist at the end that will surprise even the most seasoned mystery fan.
The Mikado Jewel is a well-written and suspenseful mystery novel. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is full of twists and turns. The novel is also historically accurate, and the author does a good job of recreating the atmosphere of London in the early 1900s.
