In einer Zeit, in der der römische Kaiser Nero Christen gnadenlos verfolgt, wachsen Tullus und Acca behütet auf einer abgelegenen Insel auf. Ihr Ziehvater, der Priester Atinas, beschließt eines Tages, sich den Christenverfolgungen anzuschließen und reist nach Rom. Tullus, getrieben von Neugier, folgt ihm gemeinsam mit Acca. In Rom geraten die naiven Jugendlichen zwischen die Fronten der alten und der neuen Religion.
