'toten Seelen' Summary
Der Roman „Dead Souls“ erzählt die Geschichte von Pawel Tschitschikow, einem skrupellosen Geschäftsmann, der durch den Kauf von „toten Seelen“ – Bauern, die zwar tot sind, aber noch im Staatsregister als lebendig geführt werden – zu Reichtum gelangen will. Tschitschikow reist durch Russland und kauft diese Seelen von verschiedenen Grundbesitzern, die an der Korruption und dem Betrug der Behörden profitieren. Während er die Seelen sammelt, deckt Tschitschikow die Laster und die Morallosigkeit der russischen Gesellschaft auf. Gogol zeichnet ein düsteres Bild der sozialen Missstände, der Korruption und des moralischen Verfalls in Russland. Die Figuren des Romans sind grotesk überzeichnet und verkörpern die negativen Seiten der menschlichen Natur: Gier, Egoismus, Heuchelei und Oberflächlichkeit. Die „toten Seelen“ symbolisieren die Leere und den Verfall der russischen Gesellschaft.
