Nella quieta atmosfera di una cittadina italiana, l'arrivo dei frati laici del convento di San Bruno sconvolge la vita di Adele Ruzzani, una giovane donna in cerca d'amore, e di un sottoprefetto dedito al suo lavoro. L'arrivo dei frati innesca un conflitto tra tradizione e modernità, mettendo in discussione le consuetudini della comunità.
