'Völsungasaga' Summary
The Völsunga saga traces the tragic lineage of the Völsungs, a noble clan destined for both greatness and destruction. The story begins with King Völsung, who is visited by a powerful sorceress who bestows a magical sword upon his sons. The saga unfolds across generations, following the rise of the heroic Sigurd, who slays the dragon Fafnir, earns the legendary sword Gram, and wins the hand of the powerful Valkyrie Brynhild. But their happiness is short-lived. As fate would have it, Sigurd unknowingly marries Gudrun, the sister of Brynhild's former betrothed. This betrayal sets in motion a chain of tragic events, fueled by jealousy, revenge, and ultimately, a bloody war that decimates the Völsungs and leaves a trail of shattered lives. The saga climaxes in the infamous massacre at the Hall of the Volsungs, where the once-great clan is extinguished, leaving behind a legacy of sorrow and the haunting realization of their inescapable fate.Book Details
