Adelgitha; Or, The Fruits Of A Single Error

Adelgitha; or, The Fruits of a Single Error

by Matthew Lewis

Set in the tumultuous era of the High Middle Ages, "Adelgitha" plunges the reader into a world of political intrigue and personal despair. The play revolves around Adelgitha, a Princess of Apulia, whose life is shattered by a single error in judgment. When she rejects the advances of Robert Guiscard, the ruthless Prince of Apulia, he unleashes a torrent of vengeance upon her, threatening to expose her past and destroy her reputation. This unfolds amidst a backdrop of historical figures like Michael Ducas, Emperor of Byzantium, and the clash of Norman ambition with Byzantine power. Lewis masterfully weaves together themes of love, betrayal, power, and morality, culminating in a tragic climax that leaves a lasting impression on the reader.
