Amphitryon
by Moliere
'Amphitryon' Summary
The play begins with the arrival of Sosia, Amphitryon's servant, who returns home after a long journey. But Sosia encounters a surprising sight: a man identical to himself, claiming to be the true Sosia. It turns out that the other Sosia is actually Mercury, the messenger of the gods, sent by Jupiter to create chaos while he pursues Alcmene. Jupiter, disguised as Amphitryon, arrives at Alcmene's house, leading to a series of comedic misunderstandings and complications. The play culminates in a dramatic confrontation where the true identities are revealed, and Alcmene, despite her initial confusion and outrage, ultimately falls into Jupiter's arms. The play explores themes of identity, deception, and the consequences of divine intervention, ultimately celebrating the power of love and its ability to overcome even the most improbable obstacles.Book Details
