by François-René de Chateaubriand
'Atala' Summary
In the year 1725, a French explorer named René arrives in Louisiana, driven by misfortune and a thirst for adventure. He is adopted by Chactas, a wise old Native American patriarch who shares his knowledge of the land and its people. Among Chactas' stories is the tale of Atala, a young Natchez maiden who falls in love with a Spanish captive. Despite her conversion to Christianity, Atala's love for the captive conflicts with her duty to her tribe. As the story unfolds, René becomes entangled in the tragic events surrounding Atala and her forbidden love, leading to a powerful and moving exploration of the human condition.Book Details
