'Atala' Summary
In the year 1725, a French explorer named René arrives in Louisiana, driven by misfortune and a thirst for adventure. He is adopted by Chactas, a wise old Native American patriarch who shares his knowledge of the land and its people. Among Chactas' stories is the tale of Atala, a young Natchez maiden who falls in love with a Spanish captive. Despite her conversion to Christianity, Atala's love for the captive conflicts with her duty to her tribe.
