Un mariner genovès, salvat d'un naufragi, viatja pel Mediterrani recopilant històries de mariners. Entre aquestes, es troba la del mite d'Hèracles i la crema de la serralada dels Pirineus, la història d'Atlàntida i la seva desaparició, i la creació del Mediterrani i les seves cultures.
