'Bacchanals' Summary
Euripides' *Bacchae* recounts the story of King Pentheus of Thebes, who disbelieves the divinity of Dionysus. Dionysus, seeking vengeance for the disrespect shown to him and his followers, arrives in Thebes, accompanied by a chorus of ecstatic Bacchantes. Pentheus, determined to suppress Dionysus's influence, arrests the god, who in turn orchestrates a series of events to punish the king. Pentheus's defiance leads to his own tragic demise, as he is driven mad and torn apart by the Bacchantes, including his own mother, Agave. The play culminates in a chilling scene where Agave, in her frenzied state, parades Pentheus's head on a pike before her father, Cadmus. Through this story, Euripides explores the dangers of hubris, the potent power of the divine, and the consequences of rejecting religious practices.
