Bei Tische, Eine Gastrosophische Novelle

Bei Tische, Eine gastrosophische Novelle

by Otto Roquette

“At Table” is a satirical novella by Otto Roquette that was first published in 1882. The story takes place at a lavish dinner party hosted by a wealthy businessman. Among the guests is Geheimrat von Schatz, a gastronome who views dining as a high art form. He is particularly interested in the beautiful Countess Erlach, who is seated next to him. However, the Countess is more interested in finding a husband for the host's daughter than in pursuing a relationship with Geheimrat von Schatz. The novella is a witty and entertaining look at the social customs and manners of the Prussian upper class in the 19th century.
