'Bruges-la-Morte' Summary
Le roman suit Hugues Viane, un veuf qui se réfugie à Bruges, ville qu'il trouve aussi morne et désolée que son propre cœur. Il se promène dans les rues désertes, hanté par le souvenir de sa femme décédée, et cherche une échappatoire à sa douleur. Un soir, lors d'un spectacle d'opéra, il aperçoit une danseuse qui lui rappelle étrangement son épouse. Cette apparition, aussi fugace que son souvenir, le plonge dans une obsession nouvelle. Il la suit, la traque, dans les ruelles sombres de la ville, se persuadant que sa femme renaît sous les traits de cette inconnue. Bruges, la « ville morte », devient alors le théâtre de son délire, un miroir de sa propre âme en deuil et de l'impossibilité d'oublier. L'atmosphère morose et poétique de la ville, l'évocation constante de la mort et du deuil, ainsi que le thème de l'obsession, font de *Bruges-la-Morte* un chef-d'œuvre de la littérature gothique.Book Details
