'Cloister and the Hearth' Summary
Gerald Eliassoen, a gifted scribe and illuminator, finds himself fleeing Rome after a dangerous encounter with a powerful official. Seeking refuge and a means to provide for his family, he embarks on a journey that takes him through the bustling cities and treacherous landscapes of Europe. His travels lead him to Holland, where he encounters a vibrant community and falls in love with Margaret, a woman of exceptional beauty and intellect. Their love story unfolds against the backdrop of a changing world, marked by the rise of the printing press and the growing influence of the Reformation. Tragedy strikes when Gerald's father and mother perish, and his brothers, driven by greed, deceive him into believing his beloved Margaret has died. Heartbroken and despairing, Gerald contemplates suicide but finds solace in the life of a friar. His journey, however, is far from over, and he must confront his own past, the sins of his family, and the complexities of faith. The Cloister and the Hearth is a sweeping epic of love, loss, and redemption, chronicling the lives of ordinary people caught in the currents of a momentous era.Book Details
