Cyrano De Bergerac (Hooker Translation)

Cyrano de Bergerac (Hooker translation)

by Edmond Rostand

Cyrano de Bergerac is a celebrated play by Edmond Rostand that explores themes of love, identity, and self-worth. Set in 17th century France, the story follows the titular Cyrano, a brilliant and courageous swordsman, poet, and duelist, plagued by an exceptionally large nose, which he believes renders him unattractive and unworthy of love. He secretly pines for the beautiful Roxane, but, convinced that she would never reciprocate his feelings, he instead uses his wit and eloquence to help a handsome but tongue-tied soldier, Christian, win her affections. As the play unfolds, Cyrano's own love for Roxane and his selfless actions reveal the true depth of his character, challenging the superficiality of societal standards and ultimately proving that true beauty lies within.
