'The d'Artagnan Romances, Vol 3, Part 1: The Vicomte de Bragelonne: Ten Years Later' Summary
Ten years after the conclusion of *The Twenty Years After*, *The Vicomte de Bragelonne* opens in 1660 with d'Artagnan serving as Lieutenant of the King's Musketeers. He yearns for the promotion to Captain, but finds himself drawn to a more ambitious goal: the restoration of the English monarchy. With the death of Cardinal Mazarin, a power vacuum emerges, creating opportunities for ambitious individuals like Nicolas Fouquet, whose financial influence threatens to destabilize the nation. King Louis XIV, under the guidance of Colbert, seeks to counter Fouquet's power and establish a more stable financial system. This puts d'Artagnan and his companions, Athos, Aramis, and Porthos, on opposing sides of the conflict: d'Artagnan and Athos align with the King and Colbert, while Aramis and Porthos throw their support behind Fouquet. Through a series of intricate plots and dramatic confrontations, the novel follows d'Artagnan as he navigates treacherous political waters, fights for the crown, and seeks to maintain the bonds of brotherhood that have defined his life. The story intertwines personal struggles with larger political ambitions, culminating in a climax that reverberates with the consequences of choices made and loyalties tested.Book Details
