Cheviot Hill, a young man of property, is engaged to Belinda Treherne. However, Cheviot is also in love with Minnie, Symperson's daughter. When Belinda discovers Cheviot's love for Minnie, she breaks off their engagement. Cheviot is heartbroken, but he eventually realizes that he is better off without Belinda.
