Fairy Tales From South Africa

Fairy Tales from South Africa

by Mrs. E.J. Bourhill

This collection of fairy tales, compiled by Mrs. E. J. Bourhill and Mrs. J. B. Drake, brings together the oral traditions of the Swazi, Ndebele, and Zulu peoples of South Africa. The stories are rich in fantastical elements, featuring witches, magicians, monsters, heroes, princesses, and both benevolent and malevolent rulers. The authors, recognizing the potential for these stories to be lost as the culture of these peoples changed, sought to preserve them for posterity. While acknowledging the inherent difficulty of translating oral stories into written form, they strived to capture the essence of these tales in English, showcasing the vibrant and enduring mythology of these South African communities.
