Havelok The Dane: A Legend Of Old Grimsby And Lincoln

Havelok the Dane: A Legend of Old Grimsby and Lincoln

by Charles Watts Whistler

Havelok the Dane is a retelling of a classic medieval legend, originally passed down orally and later documented in both Anglo-Norman French and Middle English. The story follows the adventures of Prince Havelok, rescued from a treacherous regent, who is spirited away to England by a compassionate fisherman, Grim. Grim adopts the young prince, raising him as his own son, and names the new community after himself. This version of the tale, adapted by Charles Watts Whistler in 1899, draws upon the original sources, capturing the essence of the story with its focus on Havelok's journey from an orphaned child to a powerful king fulfilling his destined role. The narrative unfolds through the voice of Radbard, Grim's son, adding a grounded perspective and a sense of the ancient storytelling tradition to the tale.
