Gemeindekind

by Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach

Gemeindekind is a moving and thought-provoking story about two siblings, Pavel and Maria, who are orphaned after their father is executed and their mother is imprisoned. Pavel is taken in by a cruel and exploitative family, while Maria is fortunate enough to find a kind and wealthy patroness. As the years pass, Pavel struggles to overcome the stigma of his father's crime and the abuse he has suffered. Meanwhile, Maria flourishes in her new home, but she longs to be reunited with her brother. Eventually, their paths cross again, and Pavel must confront his past and make a choice that will determine his future.
