Godfrey Morgan: a Californian Mystery
by Jules Verne
'Godfrey Morgan: a Californian Mystery' Summary
Godfrey Morgan, a young American, embarks on a sea voyage, seeking excitement before settling into domesticity with his fiancée. Tragedy strikes when his uncle's luxurious steamer sinks, leaving Godfrey and his companion, a dance and comportment instructor, castaways on a seemingly uninhabited island. They find themselves surprisingly well-equipped, with salvaged goods providing sustenance and tools. However, the island is far from idyllic. An encounter with a group of native people leads to the rescue of a prisoner, who becomes Godfrey's loyal companion. The island's tranquility is disrupted by the appearance of dangerous wildlife, culminating in a harrowing attack by lions, tigers, hyenas, and crocodiles. The source of these beasts remains a mystery, as does the occasional smoke plumes observed rising from the island. Godfrey's journey is one of survival, self-discovery, and unraveling the enigmatic nature of the island and its inhabitants. Verne's novel playfully satirizes the tropes of the Robinson Crusoe genre, juxtaposing the expected heroics with humorous situations, creating a story that is both thrilling and thought-provoking.Book Details
