Anselmus, a poor student, falls in love with Serpentina, the daughter of the mysterious Archivarius Lindhorst. Anselmus must overcome many obstacles to win Serpentina's hand, including the machinations of the evil witch Frau Rauerin. Along the way, he encounters a cast of strange and wonderful characters, including talking animals, magical objects, and alchemists.
