Tannhäuser
'Tannhäuser' Summary
Tannhäuser, a Minstrel Knight, has betrayed his love for the virtuous Elizabeth by dallying in the Venusberg, a realm of sensual delights. Overcome with remorse, he reveals his sins during a song contest and is forced to undertake a pilgrimage to Rome to seek absolution from the Pope. On his journey, Tannhäuser encounters various trials and temptations, including the allure of the Venusberg and the skepticism of the Pope. Despite his struggles, he remains steadfast in his determination to seek redemption. In a dramatic climax, Tannhäuser returns to Rome and presents himself before the Pope, who refuses to grant him absolution. However, as Tannhäuser is about to despair, a miracle occurs: a staff that he had carried on his pilgrimage blossoms into leaves, symbolizing the granting of his absolution. Tannhäuser is finally redeemed and reunited with Elizabeth, who has remained faithful to him throughout his trials. Together, they embark on a new life, filled with love and forgiveness.Book Details
