Horse Shoe
'Horse Shoe' Summary
The poem follows the amusing encounter between St. Dunstan and the Devil. The Devil, eager to disrupt Dunstan's musical practice, mocks the Saint's abilities. Dunstan, angered by the Devil's antics, takes swift action. He seizes a red-hot horseshoe and forcefully shoves it onto the Devil's hoof, causing him intense agony. This act of defiance, filled with a playful sense of irony, is portrayed as the origin of the superstition surrounding horseshoes as protectors against evil influences. The poem concludes with the implication that the Devil, having learned his lesson, now steers clear of any place adorned with a horseshoe.Book Details
